Around 76,000 UK companies imported goods during the last year. However, not all importers represent the same opportunity. Some imported only once or twice, while others are large corporates with established banking relationships that can be difficult for new providers to penetrate.

They have the following features:
1. Have been importing for at least 12 months, indicating regular international transactions and ongoing FX needs.
2. Generate annual revenue between £1 million and £15 million, meaning they can generate meaningful fees. At the same time, they are often overlooked by banks, may have their accounts closed or restricted with little explanation, and frequently look for additional banking relationships to obtain better pricing and maintain multiple accounts for greater operational stability.

- Are growing rapidly (e.g. working capital grows >10%)
- Import lower-risk product categories (e.g. food products rather than dual-use equipment)
- Have directors and beneficial owners from lower-risk jurisdictions (filter “Directors”)
- Operate as eCommerce (sell in multiple currencies, creating more complex FX requirements)
- Are located outside London (competition from fintech providers may be lower and outreach opportunities stronger)
